CHAPTER NINE

An hour and a half later they were safely docked, and all the passengers were off the boat. The guys walked the girls to the parking lot. Jean noticed that Johnny had brought his car. While the group was discussing what they were going to do next, Jean interrupted.

“Could Johnny and I go somewhere by ourselves?” she asked.

Michele laughed. “Where do you want to go, back to the hotel?”

“God, Jean,” Mandy said, hurt. “Don’t you think you’re being rude?”

“I’m sorry,” Jean said. She didn’t really mean it. At the moment she was too concerned about losing her mind. She turned to Johnny. “Would that be OK?”

He shrugged. “It’s fine with me. Can you guys get Dave home or wherever he wants to go in your rental?” They said it would be fine, although Mandy continued to act annoyed. “Where are we going?” Johnny asked Jean. “I don’t know,” she said honestly.

The group split in two. Since she didn’t give him any instructions, Johnny drove in the direction of the hotel. The time was a quarter to four. Jean fretted in her seat.

“Something weird is going on here,” she said finally.

“What is it?” Johnny asked.

“You still don’t believe I saw the skull, do you?”

He spoke carefully. “Frankly, no. But that doesn’t mean I think you’re crazy. I told you I’ve been narced before. It can happen to anybody.”

Jean had to chuckle. “Maybe if I told you what I’ve been going through the last couple of days, you would think I was crazy.”

Johnny suddenly pulled over to the side of the road. He turned off the engine and put his elbow on the back of her seat, twisting his body toward her.

“Tell me,” he said.

What could she do? He could see already that she was acting off-balance. If she gave him the background, he might have more patience with her. She began with Mike dying on the plane beside her, and then went on to describe both nightmares. She finished with a detailed account of the hole in the side of the skull. Johnny listened without making a sound. When she was done, he still sat thoughtfully and silently.

“What do you think?” she had to ask.

He swallowed. “Those are strange stories. Your dream was the reason you dived to the bottom today?”

“Yes.”

“That was a dangerous dream to have. What did you say the boy’s name was?”

“Mike Clyde. I’ll never forget it.” She paused. “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing.”

“You suddenly blinked. Do you know that name?”

He frowned. “It seems familiar somehow.” “How?”

“I don’t know.” He chewed on his lower lip, staring past her into the middle distance. “You say the flight attendant seemed to know this Mike?” “Yeah. I guess she talked to him on the plane before he moved into the seat beside me. I’ve thought of calling the airline and getting her number and talking to her about him.” She came to a decision. “In fact, why don’t I do that right now? Let’s drive to a phone booth.”

Johnny didn’t seem pleased with the idea.
